THE LADY SHOW - VAN FRINGE 2018

The Lady Show – A Comedy Thing is smart, sexy, self-aware, and side-splittingly hilarious! It really delivers on the show’s tagline – “Putting the joy in feminist killjoy”. The creative team artfully and positively dissects topical discriminations in the news, pop culture, and society at large to unending laughter from the audience.

In the past I have had numerous emotionally draining experiences lamenting the patriarchy, racism, sexism, and misogyny; often enlightening but draining nonetheless. Before seeing this show, I never thought I could come out the other side of this topic feeling as enlightened and uplifted as I did leaving
The Lady Show. I was in such high spirits leaving this performance and the positivity and hilarity has stuck with me. I am so thankful and excited to have discovered this comedy show! Can’t wait to see what the comedic genius of Fatima Dhowre, Diana Bang, Morgan Brayton, and Katie-Ellen Humphries brings us next.

Sonja’s Favourite Bits:

  • They have their own anthem as an outro/end to the show!!! It is epic.
  • The ladybug, the forehead, the tribute to Janelle Monae, the twins, I could keep going but I don’t want to give away all the fun ideas (because this entire show is pretty much my favourite).

Missed the Mark for Sonja:

  • I was surprised that the recorded voice introducing and facilitating the transition between acts was a male voice. Men’s traditionally deep and commanding voices have largely dominated the landscape of “presenter” voices (think movie commercials and sports commentary) and I am genuinely curious about this casting choice.
  • I’m sad I haven’t been watching this comedy show since it premiered in Vancouver a few years ago – I will certainly be keeping an eye on it now!

I had mixed feelings about The Lady Show. I really enjoyed the skits and standup for the most part. The last two skits maybe just weren’t my cup of tea though. That kind of, awkward, something is happening that you don’t understand, laughter.
The ladybug skit was particularly nice. Quite unexpected, and interesting. Loved the dots on the dress!
